Pet Selection

A starter Tamer's pet progression:

Tamer Build: Pet-Focused PvE on Immortal Realm reference table
Stage Pets
0-50 Taming Cats, dogs, rats, llamas, donkeys
50-70 Taming Wolves, hellhounds, alligators, polar bears
70-90 Taming Frenzied ostards, kirins, ki-rins, dread spiders
90-100 Taming Cu Sidhes, white wyrms, lesser dragons
100+ Taming Greater dragons, swampies, top-tier hybrids

The exact "best" pet shifts with shard balance changes. Cu Sidhe is the classic "I have one good pet" choice for mid-skill players because it's accessible at 90 Taming and durable.

Stable Management

You can stable up to 5 pets at any stable master. Stable rules:

Tamer Build: Pet-Focused PvE on Immortal Realm reference table
Rule Detail
Maximum stable slots 5 (more with specific items/expansions)
Stable cost Small per-pet fee
Pet bonding Required to resurrect a dead pet
Bond duration Persistent once established

Practical stable strategy:

  • Keep one general-combat pet active.
  • Stable a backup combat pet.
  • Stable a transport pet (Pack Llama).
  • Stable a specialty pet (one for water, one for poison, one for special content).

Gold Strategy

How to fund this build:

Tamer Build: Pet-Focused PvE on Immortal Realm reference table
Stage Income Source
Early Sell tamed pets to other players (NPC vendors pay poorly)
Mid Pet-sit / sell trained mid-tier pets
Late Greater Dragon trading, dungeon farming with pets

Tamers can earn surprisingly well by selling trained pets — a 90+ skill pet has real player market value.

Pet death panic Always carry resurrect bandages + Vet to 100
Swarm content Pets struggle vs many small mobs; magery AOE helps

When to Respec

This template stays effective long-term. Consider a respec when:

  • You want pure Bard play (drop Taming/Vet, add Provocation/Peacemaking).
  • You want to add Necromancy for combat-buff hybrid.
  • You want to drop Music for additional combat skill (Resist higher, etc).

Frequently Asked Questions

What pet should I aim for first?
A reliable Greater Dragon at 100 Taming / 100 Lore is the classic top-tier pet, but the journey there is long. For early game, a Pack Llama (carrying capacity) plus a Hellhound (combat) gets you started. Mid-game, a Cu Sidhe is the standard 'one good pet' goal — strong, accessible, doesn't require Greater Dragon hunting. Top-tier specifics shift with shard balance changes; the Beast Keeper layer adds more options.
Tamer or Bard?
Different builds. A Tamer commands pets to fight; a Bard uses Music + Provocation/Peacemaking/Discordance to make mobs fight each other. Tamers are more durable; Bards are more flexible against mixed groups. The Tamer build here is the pet-direct path. A Bard variant exists but isn't yet documented as a separate page; your Tamer template can absorb 80 Music and 80 Provocation for hybrid play.
Do my pets bond?
Yes — standard UO pet bonding works on Immortal Realm. Bonded pets can be resurrected if killed. Plus the [Beast Collection](/guide/immortal-realm-beast-collection) adds the Beastbond layer with Marks of Trust currency, which extends pet bonding into a collection arc. A serious Tamer eventually engages with both.
